Obesity and Overweight is on the rise along with the industry in a not so healthy trend. In 2006, only four states had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Twenty-two states had prevalence equal or greater than 25%; two of these states (Mississippi and West Virginia) had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%. What is even more concerning is the rise of Childhood Obesity
While we gain weight we also spend on losing weight. The U.S. Weight Loss Market is estimated to reach $61 billion dollars by 2008. We are in a perpetual amusement park shifting from Diet Pills, to bariatric surgery, nutritionist and commercial diets. It is difficult to determine the causes of overeating has many factors that include genetics, certain illnesses, physical conditions and behavioral. The overall problem however remains the amount of caloric intake is greater that spend daily. There is trend in restaurant menu to give the public opulent portions of food up to 2000 calories per plate. This caloric intake exceeds the daily amount for the average person.
This takes us to the topic of eating disorders. There are many good sources of information regarding this topic. What I would like to point out important points that I have seen over the many years of practice. Emotional problems appear to be a core component of most eating disorders. The person either does not like their body image as in Anorexia nervosa or the person almost always has anxiety or depression as in Bulimia nervosa. The incidence of eating disorders have doubled since 1960 but more alarming that 42 percent of 1st to 3rd grade girls want to be thin, 13 percent of high school girls purge and 9 percent of nine-year olds have vomited to lose weight.
